Lightening up with Quirkies

11 November 2004 | filed under Media & Politics, Just 4 Fun

Whenever I want to escape from the dark dredges of the daily news, or just make myself laugh, I read the Quirkies published by Ananova. There is no end to the weird things people do and the hilarious crimes they try to get away with.

One of today’s headlines: Man tried to convert lions to Christianity

Think this one’s going to turn out bad? When I read the headline I thought, Bush must be to blame for this! HAHAH

A Taiwanese man survived with only minor bite wounds after trying to convert two zoo lions to Christianity.

Shouting ‘Jesus will save you’, a man jumped into the lions’ enclosure at the Taipei Zoo in Taiwan to try to convert the big cats to Christianity. He suffered bites on his arms and legs but survived.

Oh yeah, there’s pictures, too.

51%Bush 48%Kerry

I saw this image a few days ago, and realized I had to post it here because it’s so well done and gives you that icky feeling created by such a divided vote:

Also on the subjects of politics and design, I came across a video piece by Simon Robson, addressing the topic of US Imperialism. Whether or not you agree with the content, the execution is brilliant. You need Quicktime to view this video entitled What Barry Says. Here’s a screenshot:

Camera shopping

10 November 2004 | filed under Arts & Music

I’ve spent quite some time researching what camera to get myself for Christmas. Lately I’ve been shooting either with my film Canon EOS 10S or my 3.2 megapixel Sony Cybershot. They’re both great cameras but I wish I could morph them together to have all the features I want in one sleek machine.

I’ve narrowed down my choices to 3 cameras, all by different manufacturers but with similar features. None of them are SLRs, because it’s not necessarily important to me to be switching lenses. This considerably reduces the cost, too. I want fast action, high resolution and a sturdy body.

BRRRR

09 November 2004 | filed under General

The first snow has fallen and it’s freaken cold. I think it’s the first time in 10 years that I cleaned snow off a car. It took at least seven minutes. We got only a couple inches so at least we don’t need to shovel yet. ;)

I snapped some photos out there today too, and my hands turned a gorgeous shade of lobster pink, yeow!

Our landlord came by to do some inspections and I commented on the chill.

“Well, you’re from up north, aren’t you?” he said.

“Um, yeah, but from the coast where it doesn’t snow!”

As you can see I’m a wimp, but see Murphy the Turkey agrees with me.

The greatest country in the world -aka live COPS blogging

06 November 2004 | filed under Just 4 Fun

Yes, that’s right, despite the fact that Bush is in power for four more years, the US of A is still the greatest country in the world. Why you ask? Well, it’s simple, the Saturday night double shot of Cops and Americas most wanted. It’s become a Saturday tradition for Tiff and I, we gather round the TV for a wholesome dose of all that is wrong with America, and the men and women who fight it.

With that in mind, I give you –live cops blogging–

The Mighty Exodus to Canada

04 November 2004 | filed under Media & Politics

It’s hilarious to see all the raving going around on the internets, people saying they’ll run away to Canada. Some are even remapping North America and creating Canada 2.0 - that joke will never die, I can guarantee it.

If you’re American wishing to marry a Canadian to gain citizenship you can go aboot it at www.marryanamerican.ca (currently experiencing overload). If you’re interested in same-sex marriage, even the prairie citytown of Saskatchewan is considering giving you a license.

You may, however, want to carefully review your escape options first, because it’s not as easy as it seems to up and leave, and surely some people don’t want you to go.

As a Canadian I can say I don’t think our beautiful, free and safe country (we don’t even lock our doors, right Michael Moore?) has had this much attention since Robin Williams performed that song from South Park at the Oscars, Blame Canada:

Impromptu Wednesday Evening Parade

03 November 2004 | filed under General

That’s right, a small parade of people, maybe 2 dozen, just marched by the house banging on drums and clanging whatever metal items they could grab from their kitchen. The parade master seemed to be chanting/yelling, “Tell me what’s up people, what’s up, what’s up!” Or something like it.

I suppose this is a positive way to enlighten the distressed mood around here today.

And it is seriously cold out there: 2 degrees celsius. Prediction of snow for Friday. BRRRR

From CNN:

Sen. Kerry phoned President Bush today to concede the presidential election, a White House aide said. Kerry is expected to make a public statement at 1 p.m. ET and Bush is scheduled to speak at 3 p.m. ET. Bush has 254 electoral votes to Kerry’s 252, according to CNN projections, with 270 needed to win. Key state Ohio, with 20 electoral votes, hasn’t completed its vote tally.

Weekend Drive: More waterfalls!

02 November 2004 | filed under Pictures of Ithaca

On Sunday we drove out to Watkins Glen (of NASCAR racing fame), at the south end of Seneca Lake. That’s the next finger over. On the way back to Ithaca we stopped to visit Robert H. Treman State Park.

There were plenty of interesting rural scenes on the drive out, though we didn’t stop for photos. Several big barns and roadside houses with bizarre porch ornaments. We did stop at a little bake sale and bought peanut butter chocolate chip cookies for the road, yum!

These are the she-qua-ga falls in Watkins Glen:
