Winter laziness
Right now it’s safe to say anyone in Ithaca who can do so has tucked themselves inside to avoid the current snowfall. There’s an official storm warning, with 7-12 inches of snow expected to fall before tomorrow when freezing rain will take over. Perfect driving conditions! Also a perfect excuse not to do much of anything, which nicely compliments my overall mood so far this year!
This being a college town, the momentum here is heavily directed by the flow of students. Considering instruction doesn’t begin at Cornell until Jan. 24, in contrast to Canadian schools where students are already back to the grind as I write this, activity is fairly quiet. And though I am not a student, I feel somewhat tied to the town schedule. A voice in my head tells me the world is on hold until the third week of January so relax, be lazy.
Be lazy...
As a result my email inbox is stacked with messages I haven't got around to replying to, I've watched too much TV on the only channel we get (this means episodes of Divorce Court and Judge Judy), and the only activity I really want to do is curl up with a ball of wool and knit. Taking this into account, I have actually managed to accomplish a lot in the past week: I have crocheted six pairs of cozy slipper/moccasins.
I indulged in some deluxe wool yarns at Homespun Boutique on State Street. When you become a serious knitter, nothing pleases you more than gently squeezing a fancy ball o yarn. I chose an array of vibrant colours in a chunky 85% wool / 15% mohair. Yum. Now I just want to use it all up so I can go back for more... MORE!
Now, backing up to New Year's day, I decided we should cook a turkey and bought groceries at Wegman's (my favorite supermarket). It was turkey clearance time - All Turkeys Must Go! - Reduced for Quick Sale! - so I got a 14-pound bird for 8 bucks and change. You can imagine how long it takes two people to eat that much bird. A few turkey soups are in our future, along with all the sandwiches we've already had, on top of eating just straight-up turkey leftovers. Managing this kind of production is quite time-consuming what with all the slicing, chopping, stock-making and freezing.
So as you can see I've actually been very busy.. HA!
